Project Engineer Co-op

June - December 2019 • Washington, IN

What I liked

I enjoyed the full time responsibilty of my work and my projects. I felt like a full time employee and was given meaningful work that reflected that. I did not have any meaningless intern work, I had real projects, with real money, and real consequences. This experience was invaluable.

What I wish was different

That there were other co-ops to work with. Being the only one in Washington I was easily over looked because there was nobody assigned to supervising the co-ops. This position exists in the other plant in Iowa, but not in Indiana. But given this lack of supervision, it did allow me to be persistent and learn to seek my own answers as well as ask for more assignments to keep me busy.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions or to make your opinions heard. This is a learning experience and it is in your favor to challenge the way you are told to look at things. My manager knew exactly how things needed to be done, and in what order, but he challenged me with very little input to see what I was capable of producing. It can feel daunting but this allows for a lot of self development.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Muscatine, IA

What I liked

The level of control I had over my projects was great. I learned a lot about project management and working with people.

What I wish was different

External factors (river was at flood stage) limited the amount of money being spent on projects, so it took longer than expected to get money approved.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, or admit you don't know something. That's how you learn.
