Kalamazoo College

Research Assistant

June 2018 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere, and the ability to actively participate in highly accredited research in my sophomore year. I enjoyed a very strong relationship with my professor, and was able to learn a lot in a very short span of time.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started earlier. I realize now how much more I could have learned had I been able to get involved earlier.

Advice

Network within your school. The reason I was interviewed for this position is because faculty members - former professors of mine - recommended me. Without their recommendation, I would not have had the opportunity to partake in this experience. My advice is to meet your professors, talk about their research, and become friends with them. This way, when opportunities come up, they know how to recommend!

What I liked

Learning different trades and working with my hands. Experiencing something that many people look over.

What I wish was different

More opportunities for students (difficult with the trade)

Advice

Tough things out (the system) experience gives you a wider scope to see the world.

Psychology Research Assistant

May 2018 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I learned so much about the topic that was being researched, and got to form a really great connection with the professor who I was working with. He is now helping me with my senior thesis!

What I wish was different

That it had been paid. The only reason I got a stipend was because the department had extra grant money that year.

Advice

Make connections with Professors! They can be amazing resources.
