Software Engineer

August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

Culture and friendly people

What I wish was different

Different location.

Advice

Your education may not be recognized here. Came in with a masters but get treated exactly the same as people with only bachelors.

Analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Good training and structure--never left with nothing to do at work. Also lots of support for female advancement at JP Morgan.

What I wish was different

Better hours. Most days it was difficult to have a second to breathe, let alone maintain my training/sleeping schedule for cross country.

Advice

Build a network of people who you can go to for advice because if something comes up later in the internship, the more friendships and connections you have, the better equipped you will be to deal with those issues or concerns.

What I liked

Everyone was very kind and wonderful to work with. JP Morgan is an inclusive and accepting company that takes care of its employees from all walks of life.

What I wish was different

I wish I had chose a different field to work in since I am not fond of web development. This was my fault however.

Advice

Learn to research and try new things. It's what the job is all about in the tech field.

Corporate Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

My internship with the Corporate Analyst Development Program was very structured and I was able to work on a project that added direct value to the team I worked on.

What I wish was different

The scope of the internship was very back office and operational and the project managers weren’t very helpful if you found that wasn’t what you wanted to do.

Advice

Be sure that you’re 100% wanting to do something more back office and not client facing before you accept this role.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • Newark, DE

What I liked

I love the people that work at the firm and the culture. In such a huge conglomerate bank, it's easy to forget about the employees and specifically the interns. It was a pleasant surprise to discover the bank cares deeply about the success of it's employees across the board. And, of course, the pay was an absolute plus.

What I wish was different

The role I had was not very financial in nature, which is what I expected going in. Much of the jobs being done today are transitioning into a broader technology-driven role. I gained so much valuable career experience, but I wish I could have worked on more relevant projects related to my major field of study.

Advice

Don't be afraid to travel outside your home. Many people limit themselves to staying close to home, but there are so many jobs out there. In addition, become a sponge and absorb every little thing that there is. Ask for feedback constantly and don't forget that everyone around you is also a human being - don't be afraid to ask for help or advice and ask plenty of questions.

Markets

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The atmosphere at the company was extremely pleasant and everybody was always willing to help or answer questions making the long hours every day much more tolerable. It also helped learn more about the product groups and the workings of an investment bank.

What I wish was different

It would have been better if I was more prepared for the long hours going into the internship. I was not expecting to work for 12 hours a day so the transition to that lifestyle was extremely difficult.

Advice

The most important thing about working at a company like JPMorgan is maximizing your time by making sure you learn everything you can and getting to know the people around you beyond just their work life.

What I liked

My team, my manager. I learned a new language

What I wish was different

More support from other interns. I wish I worked in a team.

Advice

Use the time to learn something new. Try not to accept work that will make you go through a lot of access issues. That way, you learn more about the important stuff rather than spending the summer on trying to get access to things.

Project Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed receiving real work because it felt like I was actually making a difference in my office. By being able to find errors and give my own opinion, I feel that my time was used in a valuable way for both myself and the firm.

What I wish was different

I just wish I was placed in the midtown offices because I like the fast-paced corproate setting more than the relaxed setting in Jersey City.

Advice

Always ask "why". Know why you're doing what you're doing, and don't be afraid to speak up, learn additional topics, and networking with people in different divisions.
