What I liked

The training, clients, and interns I worked with.

What I wish was different

Set up many short informational interviews with the mentors and managers of other interns. They collectively decide who gets to return.

Commercial Banking Intern

July - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Intern group was great People are very willing to take time to answer your questions and help International aspect Seniority has no affect, if you see something that should be changed, it is welcomed even at entry-level Clientele was very cool Training was very useful (80+ hours of excel, accounting, financial modeling, and valuation)

What I wish was different

I wish it was 10 weeks instead of 6 weeks and in-person (this was due to Covid-19). I wish we had more time with our team. I wish we applied our training to tangible work as opposed to just listening in on meetings and asking questions.

Advice

Meet as many people as possible, but do not try to artificially extend an introductory meeting with inauthentic questions just because the Zoom was scheduled for a half-hour. If you can get to know them in 15-minutes, then it is perfectly fine to end the meeting early, they may appreciate having the extra time before their next meeting to catch up on emails or decompress as many people have back to back meetings for the whole day.

Retail Banking and Wealth Management Analyst

June - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

The management team I was placed with was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I received all the training and support I needed from my assignment supervisor. Additionally, the work environment was equal parts inviting and refreshingly meritocractic.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to learn about different sectors of the banking industry outside of RBWM.

Advice

Come to your first day on the job prepared to learn; there is a lot to digest when it comes to the unique role of the company in the banking industry, and it is imperative for anyone working with HSBC in the long-term to be aware of the multiple variables and trends with respect to the bank’s operations.

Corporate Banking Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

There were many parts I liked from this internship! The company sent me to San Francisco, and I got to experience different office cultures and lifestyles. There was quantitative and qualitative work experience, and everyone at the NY office was friendly and willing to help all of the interns! Among the intern class, there were so many different experience levels and backgrounds, and everyone got along with each other. Overall, I'd definitely recommend the internship to other people.

What I wish was different

I wish more of the internship could have been quantitative training. I wanted to be able to extend what I learned in classes during the internship, but there weren't a lot of chances to do that. Instead, there was a lot of research and qualitative work, which was also good experience in and of itself, but the financial analysis portion of the internship didn't come into play until the end.

Advice

Network! This is important not only for making the most out of the internship itself, but also for return offers! It's super helpful for your recruiter if other people in the office know you and can vouch for you. Also, it's important to keep asking for work, which can be an excellent way to network - if you're ever bored, you're doing something wrong. Asking for work can also expose you to areas of the bank you wouldn't interact with otherwise, which is really important, especially when it comes to evaluating your long-time career path.

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with. I met fabulous people during the interview process and throughout my internship. I chose HSBC for the international aspect and the opportunities it has for its employees

What I wish was different

I got hired in October and didn’t meet the team until June. It would have been great to have more contact during the year before my start date

Advice

Meet everyone you can. HSBC has an amazing culture and people are willing to meet you for a coffee and chat about what they do. It made me feel like part of the bank and helped me learn more about what possibilities are avalible to me.

retail banking and wealth management intern

June - August 2018 • Depew, NY

What I liked

My team was really cool and I got along with them so well. I was on the Documentation, Change, and Contol team where I helped with internal problems in the company that would affect the performance of agents and their ability to help customers.

What I wish was different

There’s nothing different I would’ve wished. I learned a lot there.

Advice

Always ask to learn things because you’re never being annoying to your manager. And treat your coworkers with respect because chances are they know a lot more than you.
