What I liked

The best part of my internship was getting to know the crews that I worked on and learning the processes of the work. I love hearing everyone’s journeys about their past, and how they ended up doing what they enjoy or hate. I learned these stories from farming boys and downtown Detroit residents. I also enjoyed learning the processes of day to day work, and how a project can be laid out efficiently with all potential

What I wish was different

I think that giving interns a few days when their schedules permit to come into the office, or have a PM drive to the site, to learn about breakdowns and estimating- the design and business aspect. This is the whole other aspect to this major and I didn’t felt like I got enough exposure to estimating.

Advice

This internship allowed me to; learn processes from Hardman, establish and build connections with workers from my crew, along with many other companies, and learn hands on skills. I got exposure to quite a few processes that Hardman uses. This role was a really good learning experience and would be highly valuable by civil engineering students. There was a lot of opportunities to use my communication skills, and engineering skills. The working environment was neat to learn about, and getting use to construction field is necessary to learn if that is your focus as a CE.
