Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2018 • Georgia State University, GA

What I liked

I loved working in the Carruth-Wylcinzki lab. I gained alot more experience and knowledge as a neuroscience major. I got to study humming bird brains, which is a very rare never done before research. I got to learn how to use various computer softwares for data collection and I learned about more options for my future careers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten some more hands on experince with IHC (immunohistochemistry) lab procedures.

Advice

I would say to not be nervous or afraid when working in a lab for the first time. You will make mistakes and have to catch up, but if you stick around it gets easier and easier.

What I liked

I like how I got to learn new things in regarding to technology and my coworker are amazing.

What I wish was different

I would only change my hours, I had 3 classes in the summer and I worked in the mornings.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to know what you can handle before you try new things, because this was my first job and I thought I could handle it with all my classes but it was difficult.

Undergraduate Researcher

What I liked

I loved that as an undergraduate researcher I am experiencing a new side of chemistry.

What I wish was different

I wish that the hours did not overlap with my summer classes and allowed me more opportunities to study.

Advice

I highly recommend become an undergraduate researcher if you're a science major. It opens the door to new possibilities of where you can take your career.

Researcher

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to continue the research I had started during the previous school year. Instead of assisting the graduate student, I received my own project which allowed me to strengthen my research skills such as complex problem solving, analysis, and different lab techniques.

What I wish was different

What I wish I would have done differently is not take a summer class alongside research in order to dedicate more time to research.

Advice

I never imagined myself coming to college and doing anything but taking classes because I tend to be an introvert. Therefore, one piece of advice I would give is stepping outside of your comfort zone is the first step in discovering your many talents.

CATLab Student Assistant

December 2017 - July 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I certainly liked helping out students on a day to day basis, and definitely liked talking to my coworkers while I was there. The pay was good for what the job was (computer lab front desk), and I certainly gained good first-level IT experience. Very flexible on scheduling, and overall a generally relaxed atmosphere (although at times could get hectic).

What I wish was different

I would have liked it much better if suggestions and ideas were actually acted upon (very much an attitude of not being too efficient), and if problems that had been repeatedly brought up had actually been fixed. The university in general has serious efficiency problems, especially in the HR department (took over a month to get hired).

Advice

I would definitely recommend this position to GSU students, whether downtown or at the perimeter campuses. It is a good early job experience, and pays relatively well for a university job at this level. However, expect hiring to take awhile - if you urgently need a job soon, I would look elsewhere.
