Team Leader

June - August 2018 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I liked working with children on their weekly projects. It was a really fun environment, so it did not feel like a job at all. Essentially I hung out with a group a kids and made sure they had a lot of fun with their projects.

What I wish was different

I wish the camp was bigger! The location was smaller and there was construction happening. Over the summer it gets really hot, so many kids complain. However, being able to play indoors was beneficial for that.

Advice

I would say enjoy your time and experiences with the kids. Also get to know your co-workers well because you won't have a lot of time with them. Prepare for various situations with kids. Everything will get complicated easily if nothing is handled quickly. For example, sharing, being annoying, crying, fighting, you'll need to be able to understand how to handle the situation professionally.

Team Leader

June - August 2018 • Los Feliz, CA

What I liked

Working with an amazing group of people who came together to create week after week of fun activities and amazing learning experiences for kids throughout the summer. Everyone would give it their all to see that the camp was a success, and the Camp Director I had at my location was a really awesome and supporting person. I truly felt like what I was doing was having a great impact, as I could see how much the kids would enjoy camp every day thanks to my and everyone's efforts, as well as all the praise the parents had in regards to their and their child's experiences with Camp Galileo.

What I wish was different

Honestly, there really isn't much that I wish could be different. Working for Galileo was always a tiring experience at the end of the day (as I typically worked the normal camp hours as well as aftercare hours), but I loved every moment and had fun. Truly a fulfilling experience that I would love to do again if able.

Advice

Just be yourself! If you're genuine and you have fun and you embrace your inner child, then your experience will be amazing. While you are the team leader for a group of campers, and you do have to be firm and enforce order when necessary, you can also be there friend too. It was great to be crazy and whacky, and join in on the activities with them, cause being able to play at work in a sense, is something you don't always get to see or have.

Summer Intern

July - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the contact I was able to have with the kids and that I felt like I contributed to their summer experience. I liked to work that was delegated to me and that I felt like I made a meaningful contribution to the camp.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more of an opportunity to express the struggles me and my team faced with the limited resources we were given. I felt the director didn't pay much attention to what we needed.

Advice

Take the opportunity and work hard while still having fun. After all, it is summer camp!

Summer Camp Assistant Instructor

June 2016 - August 2018 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

I really like the summer camp environment and how there are so many opportunities for campers and staff to express themselves. As an employee, I really loved being able to collaborate with my fellow staffers to help camp run smoothly and make sure the kids were having fun. This is the perfect job for gaining professional experience, while still being able to have fun in the sun.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had time to plan certain activities/procedures before the summer began, so that we would be able to problem-solve and adjust from the get-go. Since we didn't get the ball rolling on certain things until the beginning of camp, it felt like we spent the entire summer trying to fix some things, and we never reached the goal that we were aiming for. Camp only lasts for 8 weeks, so it's hard to re-evaluate and redesign in such a quick amount of time.

Advice

This job has really pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and try things that I would never even thought of and work with people in ways that I had never imagined. And because of this, I have grown so much professionally and just as an individual. So, I would advise others to take on opportunities that may seem a little uncomfortable to them, instead of shying away from it.

Advice

Apply for any position you think you are suited for, even if you don’t meet all the expectations. And be clear on scheduling, they are very flexible as long as you tell them your conflicts in advance. And enjoy it, because those kids are amazing and the future of the world. 6 weeks isn’t long enough.
