Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

Enjoyed learning to use new Python libraries (Pandas, Numpy) and implementing algorithms associated with celluar automata. Frequent presentations were difficult, but helpful in the long run.

What I wish was different

More one-on-one assistance with research advisor. Any issues I encountered had to be solved independently--asking for help from professor usually resulted in "just go around/ignore the issue"-type advice.

Advice

Be very certain of the requirements and topic of your research project before fully committing.

Student Researcher Psychology Department

What I liked

I learned a variety of research skills applicable to psychology and other fields of study. I was able to collaborate on my own project with my professor and see an entire project come to completion in the entire summer.

What I wish was different

I think I would have preferred a different research topic, as my topic was hard to invest myself in.

Advice

I think it's important to be a self-starter and keep yourself accountable for the work that needs to be done.

Research Fellow

May - August 2019 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

I loved being able to formulate presentations for the conferences I got to attend, and I absolutely cherished my conference experiences, funded by the Humanities Department Fund and the Undergraduate Research Office. I also loved being able to research things I cared about and have a great deal of freedom in the formulation of topics and questions and my schedule so long as I got things accomplished.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better forum/community for students doing Summer research to really interact and share experiences in a way that didn't seem forced or strictly academic.

Advice

When you research something so extensively for even a Summer, you walk away from that experience an expert. Own that professionalism and your accomplishments--submit to professional conferences or publications. Talk candidly about your experience with other researchers, colleagues, or friends. It is not pretentious to be proud of yourself.
