May 2019 - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

First Republic Bank offers a unique and growth-centered environment where learning is always encouraged and always fostered by other colleagues. There are countless opportunities--from all-company learning and development events to intern-specific workshops and speaker events--for you to learn. First Republic Bank truly lives up to its people-first culture: both on the client side and the employee side!

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask to sit in on different department's meetings, attend all-company meetings to get a bigger picture of FRB as a whole. You will definitely learn something!

Private Wealth Management Intern

May - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Professional and practical experience. It was great to finally be able to work - the reason for me to go to college. The people were incredibly nice and I was really able to find opportunities to explore and grow during the internship - making it a great learning experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more people back in the office. I think networking with people outside of my team was a huge lost opportunity.

Advice

Stop trying to land your dream job - unless you know exactly what you want to do in life. Getting experience is much more important and it is going to expose you to different things that will help shape your thought process and help you make better decisions about your career and your future.

Talent Acquisition Intern

June 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I really had not envisioned myself working at a bank, but entering First Republic, the amazing company culture convinced me otherwise. My team is extremely supportive and welcoming, and the opportunities for growth truly are endless. If I want to learn about something or take in a new challenge, colleagues go out of their way to ensure I have the resources I need to succeed. They also have a great, and growing, internship program with numerous events per week to help us gain new knowledge and exposure, so I felt very supported all throughout my summer at FRB!

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more opportunities for cross collaboration across teams to work on projects together. Although it is always encouraged to reach out to colleagues in other departments for coffee/lunch chats.

Advice

Before applying, make sure to research FRB and ensure that your own values align with the company culture. Also show excitement, a growth mindset, and a positive attitude, if possible. As for the experience itself, get out of your comfort zone to talk to colleagues/create those bonds and ask for help when you need it, and ask for new opportunities you want to take on. FRB is such a supportive company!

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the team I got to work with throughout the summer! Everyone was great at helping me to understand different concepts, and was very open and available to answering any questions I might have. Additionally, I was given my own project to work on throughout the summer, which I really enjoyed, as I was able to have control over the project and its decisions. Furthermore, my project was more than just a side-project for an intern; I was working on actual code to be deployed within the bank, which was very important to me, to feel that my work was valued and meaningful.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask questions and be curious! Everyone (and that includes top executives) wants to help you grow, whether that means explaining a line of code, helping you through design decisions, giving you a bigger picture of how the bank operates, or just giving career advice in general. Interns aren’t expected to know everything, but you are expected to be able to learn and improve.

Preferred banking intern

May - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

First republic bank has such a friendly staff. From the advice given to the training everyone was so enthusiastic to help.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to know my fellow interns a lot earlier. They were such amazing people from all different backgrounds but I was too invested in my work to socialize as much as I should've.

Advice

Do not be afraid to make mistakes. An internship is like a class. In the fast paced environment, it can be overwhelming to try to be flawless. Make mistakes and learn from them. Also make sure you ask for help often; you may end up not only learning how to solve the problem but you may also end up learning a life skill in the process. Picasso once said " good artists borrow and great artists steal".

Business Banking Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

First Republic Bank is one of a kind. The bank as a whole has such a collaborative and supportive culture. They adapted quickly to this new work environment and maintained a positive and efficient work ethic. Not only was I working remotely, but I was also working in a different time zone -- they were extremely flexible, caring, and helpful. I had opportunities to build relationships with clients, work on internal processes, and chat with various co-workers across numerous departments, from entry level to senior level positions. There is a constant support team behind you; everyone wants to help each other succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to work on projects in other departments.

Advice

Culture is huge at First Republic: make sure you understand their values and decide if they align with your own before you apply. Once at FRB, ask questions!! Build your network and ask others about what they do and their journey to their current position -- everyone is more than happy to answer any questions you have.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed longer! I miss my team so much and I miss the interns I worked with as well.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Everyone I worked with was always happy to help with any issues I came across, and if they weren't able to help themselves, they were able to direct me to who to go to as well as some next steps to take.

Business Banking Intern

June - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I have interned with First Republic Bank for the last two summers and highly recommend the internship program to any prospective student interested in learning more about the banking industry. Throughout the program, I connected with experienced bankers and analysts that provided me with countless learning opportunities; it was very rewarding to connect my academic coursework with the projects I worked on at First Republic. The positive and collaborative culture allowed me to network with professionals in all areas of the bank, even top executive leaders over coffee chats. I witnessed first-hand the care and pride the First Republic Bank has for their clients and employees. The internship program has significantly benefited my professional development and I encourage anyone interested to apply.

Middleware Engineering Intern

June 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I liked the collaborative and supportive company culture. The people I worked with at First Republic were always trying to help me learn and grow as much as possible. Being the first Intern in my team, the team assigned me complete ownership of tasks, enabling me to learn. It made me feel part of the team, and not just an intern, as I was contributing on regular basis.

What I wish was different

Being a bank, initial access takes a lot of time. But it is smooth after that. Also this being my first internship, i would have loved it if it was in person internship. Interaction with my team was something I missed.

Credit Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Management is more than happy to take time to talk to interns. I learned a lot over the course of the internship and was given choices by my boss as to what I wanted to work on/hear more about. The internship remained engaging throughout the 2 months.

What I wish was different

Advice

Talk to as many interesting people as possible. I found that everyone was willing to have at least a 30 minute chat with me. Ask good questions and you'll be amazed by what you can pick up.

Eagle Lending Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the collaborative and supportive company culture. The people I worked with at First Republic were always trying to help me learn and grow as much as possible. As a second-year intern, they gave me more responsibility and I felt like I was contributing every day.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to be in person this year, but I am lucky to have had two internships at First Republic. Even though we were completely online in Summer 2020, I still learned so much about business lending and loan underwriting. I am so grateful that First Republic continued its internship program during COVID, and this is an ode to how strong the company is.

Advice

First Republic is an outstanding company to work for and start your career. Some of the most genuine people work here and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Business Banking Intern

June - August 2020 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

First Republic did an excellent job adapting so quickly to COVID-19 making our internship experience a virtual one. Despite the online nature of the internship, I still felt very connected to my co-workers and really got to experience the culture of First Republic Bank. Everyone is incredibly friendly, and work really does feel like a home away from home. Everyone is always wanting to help others, speak to their experiences, and make everyone else feel comfortable with their work. Not once did I feel like I was floundering over the course of my internship because the support system among interns and from management to interns was so strong.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a bit more infrastructure for facilitating coffee chats between interns and existing PQAs. FRB did a great job with this overall and was hindered by the fact that we were in a virtual environment, but having some guidance on how to pace myself with the chats would have been helpful as I crammed a lot of mine in the last few weeks of the internship.

Advice

Do your best to talk to as many people as possible! A lot of employees have varied experiences in banking, finance, and credit, etc. You can learn so much from talking to them. Also, say yes to everything! I was able to take on more than I thought I could and really take ownership of tasks by just saying yes to everything that came onto my plate. I highly recommend applying! You'll learn a lot, work with great people, and have a fantastic experience!

Quantitative Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people. More importantly, I actually learned Python and SQL on the job and was working with live customer production data. They put a lot of trust into me, and it worked out. I ended the summer presenting and conversing 1 on 1 with the COO.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I learned so much and had meaningful interactions with people. I wouldn’t change anything.

Advice

Go in, ready to learn. It’s okay if you don’t know everything about everything. If you are ready to work hard and learn everyday, you will do really well.

Intern, RM Team Support

July - September 2019 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

The staff was extremely friendly and patient with me as I was training, very competitive pay, and I learned a lot about the logistics of setting up loans. Overall, a fantastic opportunity, especially for those who want to learn about loan specialists.

What I wish was different

My internship was mostly clerical, and I wish I had learned a little bit more about how the loan specialists team related to other departments.

Advice

Keep good notes and keep track of everything. It's a very detail-oriented internship, and any small mistakes could potentially jeopardize the loan.

Private Wealth Management Intern

What I liked

The team was great and there was a lot of facetime with senior financial advisors. it was also nice to gain exposure to a variety of different asset classes: fixed income, equities, and illiquid alternative investments.

What I wish was different

It would have been beneficial to have the opportunity to work overtime.

Advice

I think its most important for students to start the job hunting process before they arrive back at WFU and get caught up in social activities and academics.
