What I liked

I really enjoyed how we were given work almost right away and given responsibilities. It definitely made me feel like an actual employee and not just an "intern". My supervisor also made me feel part of the squad and I was able to sit in on meetings and briefings to get an understanding of what exactly the squad was doing. I also felt comfortable to ask questions about something that I didn't understand and was met with answers that were very beneficial.

What I wish was different

I wish the administrative side of the internship wasn't so involved with us. A lot of the times it took away from our internship duties and our squads were left without anyone to help them. It was my second year so I had done all of the intern activities the year before, so I wish that I didn't have to participate in them and actually get my work done. I wanted to prepare myself more for a full-time position since I am graduating soon. I felt like the intern activities took away from this. The administrative team was also very hostile towards the interns and this took away from our experience.

Advice

Always do what your squad does because they are the most important part of building your reputation and whether or not you return. Make sure to eat lunch with them, check-in with them to see if they need help, and also get to know them and have them get to know you.

Student Workforce Trainee

June - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked being immersed in a completely different work environment than one I had ever experienced before. Here, I made close connections with individuals passionate in the field of national security and developed skills that will influence how I tackle my future career interests.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to learn about the different sectors available, so that I could have integrated into one better suited to my passions. I did not realize until much later into the internship that there was a sector devoted to media and journalism, which I believe could have helped me further explore and develop my writing and journalistic interests.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out! My hesitation in inquiring about different opportunities until later on in the program hindered my ability to flourish in ways I could have if I had asked earlier on. Just because certain opportunities aren't clearly stated or offered does not mean that you can't pave a way for yourself and future interns to thrive in. An internship doesn't have to be a routine listen-to-who's-in-charge situation-question how you can do more to explore your passions!

Honors Intern

June 2020 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

My favorite part about this internship was my ability to work closely with every type of employee that the FBI has, including special agents, intelligence analysts, and other support staff. I also have to give my appreciation for the FBI to hire interns for permanent positions. I was able to accept a permanent full-time position for after I graduate which is an amazing step in my career.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had made more connections. I tried to make as many as I could but I feel like I could have made more.

Advice

Do not wait for people to tell you what to do. Ask for something to do, and always say yes no matter what. Also, take your time to ask people about their stories, not only are they interesting but they also provide valuable insight.

Cyber Security Intern

June 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It's an experience like no other. You get to use tools that isn't used in the private sector or any other organization. They paid for my monthly Metro Expenses so that saved me a good amount of money. The information that you are exposed to is eye-opening.

What I wish was different

Having a more flexible schedule, especially since it is to Washington D.C so the commute is very long.

Advice

Make the most out of your experience. Network with people that are outside of your division to see the opportunities that the FBI offers. The FBI is on a hiring spree for young talent.

FBI intern

June 2019 • Little Rock, AR

What I liked

Unlike working at the national headquarters, I worked in the Little Rock field office. Meaning, i worked as an actual employee, for the violent crimes unit. Everything I am working on even now is confidential or secret, meaning it cannot be disclosed, nor can I say who my co-workers are.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

It is extremely difficult to get into this position, so if you do manage to get the job, you have to perform every single day to show how thankful you are to have been given the position.
