Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Financial Management Scholar

June - August 2023 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

Helpful and kind supervisors and coworkers, work can be pretty interesting, very good compensation for travel

What I wish was different

Lot of bureaucracy and hoops to jump through when it comes to the head administration's requirements. For interns, not enough work to actually last you the full day or week, so you will often have downtime

Advice

Work hard on getting eligibility requirements done as soon as possible. Administration does not mess around with those.

Financial Management Scholar

June - August 2023 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

I have enjoyed my time at the FDIC in RMS. The trainings and experience gained through the apprenticeship model has been a highlight. The work is challenging but there are resources and team members that help guide you in the right direction. This internship has limited "intern work" and more exposure to what it is like to be a Financial Institution Specialist. The employees are very team oriented and amiable.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer; eleven weeks flew right by.

Division of Insurance and Research Intern

June - August 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It was a professional environment where I got to meet a lot of people from various backgrounds. I was exposed to various career paths within the corporation and saw the opportunity to learn more once in the company.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be prepared to be confused for the first two weeks because there is a lot of new information that can be general or very specific to the department. It takes time to understand the way things are run but it is easy to catch on.

Federal Institution Intern

May 2020 • Hopkinsville, KY

What I liked

The job paid great and I was treated as if I was a commissioned employee. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I had plenty of time to complete assignments.

What I wish was different

The job was not easy due to my lack of knowledge in banking. The other examiners are quick to help when you do not understand, though.

Advice

Before applying, do many google searches about how to ace an interview with the FDIC. It is based on a formula, not how much they like you.

Regional Intern

May 2020 • Blue Bell, PA

What I liked

The FDIC prides itself on mentorship and teaching, so the internship program is extremely effective and I was able to learn quite a bit through orientation and my weekly meetings with my supervisor. The transition to an online format went smoothly and I liked the team atmosphere we were able to create even through mandatory telework.

What I wish was different

I only wish it could have been done in person. I was told multiple times that traveling and working together in person are the best parts of the job, so I look forward to working in person there one day!

Advice

Ask a lot of questions. This is not a job where you are expected to figure it out on your own. There is so much information to learn that it is a necessity for you to ask questions, and every supervisor I have met has expressed how much they love answering questions. The entire teaching structure of the FDIC is built on mentorship relationships and open forum question/answering.

FMS Scholar

May - August 2020 • Albuquerque, NM

What I liked

The people were great and the program did an outstanding job in providing learning experiences and hands on opportunities. The work was rewarding, the atmosphere was delightful, and it made a genuine impact on my work trajectory.

What I wish was different

It was 2020, so unfortunately it moved to remote. I am thankful it was not canceled, but the actual experience was far different than anticipated.

Advice

You get out what you put in. So many people waited at their 'desks' and were board all summer. Take initiative, find your own work, ask to learn and observe.

Risk Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Shreveport, LA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with banking professionals on actual exams. I got to work in the field with FDIC agents and obtained alot of hands-on experience in auditing.

What I wish was different

I had to telework due to COVID, so I would it could've been in-person. However, it was still a wonderful experience.

Advice

This internship is awesome! I would say be prepared to learn alot of information very quickly. It is fast-paced, but the other agents are very patient and willing to help.

Risk Management Intern

May - August 2020 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I loved working alongside bank examiners of all experience levels. You gain hands on experience in the world of bank management and learn skills transferrable beyond banking. The FDIC ensures you stay updated on economic and financial sector news and constantly provides training and professional development opportunities.

What I wish was different

My experience was completely virtual due to current circumstances. I wish I had opportunity to participate in on-site examinations.

Advice

There is a steep learning curve in the beginning of the internship. Many regulatory and banking concepts are new and confusing to interns, but coworkers are very helpful as you get acclimated to the environment. Don't be afraid to admit when you don't understand something, and stay in touch with the nationwide intern class.
