Induction Furnace Operator

May 2019 • Forest City, MO

What I liked

That the schedule is rotating. Meaning I would have 3-4 days off a week and this allows me time to complete courses online. Also the pay is not exceptional but it is more than enough to live off of. I will also note that while the work conditions are often brutal during the summer they are not too bad during cooler months and employees are allowed to take as many “cool off” breaks as they want or need.

What I wish was different

The conditions. I was the blast furnace operator during the summer. Temperatures in that area exceeded 120 degrees and resulted in cramps and heat sickness at times. Also this job requires me to drive 40 minutes because of location.

Advice

Before considering doing a labor intensive job such as this consider whether or not you are willing to endure harsh environments on a regular basis. There was days I did not know if I would be able to drive home because my legs would constantly cramp up and make drive unsafe. I would have to push through this and often go back to work after being up all night with cramps. If this is not something you are willing to deal with I would suggest not pursuing this job. If you have a significant amount of financial responsibilities and want to continue college this job is perfect. You receive healthcare, a living wage, and enough time to excel in your classes.

Industrial Quality Intern

May 2019 • Milton, GA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with the the project I was assigned. I got to travel to Kansas City to visit one of their plants and a Walmart DC in Alabama. It was also 15 minutes away from my house.

What I wish was different

I wish my project would have had more data analysis.

Advice

Make sure you have good mentors during your internships. They can be more impactful than the actual project.
