Emerson

Leadership Development Program Intern

May - August 2017 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work on a great team down in Augusta. I was part of the controls compliance and business integration team. During my internship I had the chance to work on numerous projects that dealt with the integration of a $500 million company. This led to multiple business trips around the country with the team. I made some lifelong connections with some of the 100+ interns as well as the full time employees at Textron on my team. I was exposed to SAP and learned how the ERP is used in daily business operations. I also developed efficiency in excel through daily use completing tasks.

What I wish was different

Although I was challenged with many large projects throughout the summer, there were some days where I did not have much work to do. This challenged me to connect with the team, learn the kind of work they are doing for the company, and ask to take some work off of their plate.

Advice

Take the initiative to network with everyone in the office regardless if they are on your immediate team. There is always an opportunity to learn from someone else, and making these connections is a great way to take on new projects and make the most out of your internship experience.

Business Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Danbury, CT

What I liked

I loved my manager and the way that he mentored me, always asking about skills I wanted to learn, what I was working on in my classes, and for ideas that could help him on his projects. He exposed me to meetings with executives and multiple business groups, and also allowed me to do my own work with offices across the country and in different global regions. My manager was absolutely the best part of working with Emerson, and I know that they take care to hire and train amazing managers.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed longer to see the long term results of the project I was working on, but we'll see if I'll be able to return to this team in the future.

Advice

Ask for opportunities, and don't hesitate to give constructive feedback to people who are "above" you. They will usually appreciate input from a new set of eyes with a different perspective than someone who's been on the team for ten years.

NA Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Marshalltown, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed being in a different state, and the people I worked with. The intern program was really fun and we got to go to many different event. Housing was almost completely covered.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more ongoing direction throughout my internship. I didn't have access to information I needed through the summer. The business majors were payed significantly less than the engineering students even if they were doing the same exact thing. Many engineering students were in intern fields that I actually had more skill at.

Advice

It's important to keep asking for direction and help as you go. Make it clear what's to be expected of you.

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Co-op

January - May 2018 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

I was given interesting projects from the start and ones that I would actually be able to use in a full-time position. Additionally, I liked the people I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a better onboarding process within the department; what softwares you need access to, what you need a password for, how to use the various softwares...

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and always ask for more projects, eventually they'll give in and give you more responsibility.

Innovation Engineering Co-op

January - August 2018 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

Working at Emerson has been one of the greatest experiences that I have ever had. The company promotes personal and professional development and really focusses on the growth of their interns and co-op students. I enjoyed the working with company employees and I found that they were very welcoming and helpful.

What I wish was different

Advice

Just like many experiences, the amount of effort you put in will affect how much you get out of it. For my role, I was allowed to work at my own pace, but it was up to me to challenge myself and push forward. I felt that my experiences taught me a lot and I am thankful for the opportunities that Emerson has provided me.
