Eli Lilly and Company

Academic Contractor for Global Diversity & Inclusion Office

May 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This has been an extremely educational experience for me. I have learned so much about working in corporate America. This position is also unique because I wonder under an employee in Employee Communications on a Human Resources team, which has exposed me to two different (but both highly critical) departments of Lilly.

What I wish was different

I wish this position was paid with a salary rather than an hourly rate. This would have eliminated the pressure of having to put in more hours.

Advice

Build your network within Lilly. Everyone there wants to see interns succeed and eventually return to the company as full-time employees. Schedule 1:1's with as many people as you can from various departments. Attend events hosted by the Global Diversity & Inclusion Office and their Employee Resource Groups. Make the most of your experience here because it will pay off in the long-run.

Sales Representative Intern

May - July 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

I was able to do hands-on work in the field as if I was a full-time employee, this allowed me to see how I would be treated if I were to pursue a career with Eli Lilly. I enjoyed the people I worked with, the training in Indianapolis, and the benefits of a company car were very generous.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been told before-hand that you spend a lot of time alone in the car.

Advice

I would absolutely recommend this internship to any marketing or sales-interested undergraduate student. It opened my eyes to a lot of the downfalls of a field position that are not advertised through job descriptions. Since the pharmaceutical industry is so intensely regulated, I believe I will be prepared for a professional sales profession in pharmaceuticals or not but would highly recommend understanding how regulated it is before applying!

Pharmaceutical Sales Intern

May - July 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

The best thing about this internship that you make your own schedule. Also, company provides you with a company vehicle, iPad, and credit card for gas and lunch expenses. They will fly you over to Indianapolis for one week of training where you will meet all of the interns across the country. You have an opportunity to work on the team and make an impact on the customers. It gives you a chance to develop yourself and see if this job is a right fit for you.

What I wish was different

I wish this internship would less more than 10 weeks. I still had an amazing time. I enjoyed working as a sales intern. I saw how much I grew in the end on the internship in comparison to how I started.

Advice

The biggest advice I have is that when you start this internship make connections with everyone and try to make as many friends as you can. You will have an opportunity to meet CEO of the company during your training in the Indianapolis. This is your chance, take the most out of it, and make it the best for yourself. This internship is definitely for the passionate students who are outgoing and not afraid to meet new people.

Pharmaceutical Sales Representative Intern

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I cannot say enough good things about this internship. My entire team along with the District manager were all readily available for support and guidance. If you are an outgoing person, this is the perfect internship for you because you cand spend the entire day talking to others. Lilly trains you exceptionally well from the moment that you start, and continue with aid until the end of the internship. I felt completely prepared and excited to go to work every day. Because I've been interested in the medical field for a while, this was the perfect intership.

Molding Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

Terrific company, very friendly environment, "Team Lilly" atmosphere, interns are treated very well. Your internship is centered around a project and you build a great team to support you. Fridays you will spend your days with the other interns taking tours of different departments and having "Lunch and Learns".

What I wish was different

Location and living situation were tough and being far from home.

Advice

Have as many 1:1's as you can! Enter with a willingness to learn about the industry and the company. If you are not willing to relocate, this isn't the internship for you. To make the most of the experience you should know that the company wants to bring back people to work full-time if you do a good job. If you have no intention of going there, it is not worth the time.

Pharmaceutical Sales Representative Intern

May - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

My internship with Lilly offered incredible hands-on experience that was unmatched by any other internships I pursued. I had the opportunity to go to corporate for sales training, work closely with mentors on my sales team, and was encouraged to set goals that allowed me to work at my full potential. With the Lilly internship, I also had the privilege of working with and learning from doctors and other staff in primary care offices. This allowed me to gain real-world pharmaceutical sales experience and learn from all aspects of the industry.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advise applicants that this is a rigorous program. Applicants should expect to invest a lot of time and effort, as the internship offers so many opportunities to learn and grow as a young professional. The more interns are willing to put into the experience, the more they will gain. Be prepared to actively participate, think outside the box, and set challenging goals for yourself!
