Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I loved the type of research I was doing about protein trafficking of a potassium channel in the kidney. It was great to learn new techniques in a different model since I used yeast during the summer and work with mice here at Dickinson. I made amazing connections, friends, and mentors that I suspect will be helpful in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish it was at a different university. Duquesne is a catholic school and so I around a lot of religious references which made me uncomfortable. It was also very far from home which I learned I don't appreciate.

Advice

Be open minded. My experience was part of the Neurodegenerative Undergraduate Research Experience program although my research had nearly nothing to do with neuroscience. Even so, I loved it and learned a tremendous amount.

What I liked

This job has been a great learning experience for me. I have learned so much and it gave me a better understanding in what I would like to do in my future career. I really enjoy the people I work with. The Alumni Engagement team at Duquesne is awesome and they have helped me learn so much.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

Working in an actual academic laboratory alongside faculty and graduate students

What I wish was different

Living situations

Advice

You can make as much as you want to out of the work. It can get repetitive and tedious (it's real research), and you need to have the right mindset to engage.

Accounting Intern

What I liked

Very relaxed environment, and everyone is super friendly. They are super flexible if something comes up and you need to change your schedule. They trust you with real work, not just making copies all day.

Research Fellow

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

My lab and the graduate students and the other people in the program. I also enjoyed being in a different city for the summer. I feel like I learned a lot of new methods and strengthened old ones and actually got to use skills I learned here in lab, which was cool.

What I wish was different

Wouldn't have minded a slightly higher pay rate, but it is government funded.

Advice

Work hard in the beginning to get the more physical part of your research out of the way. That will leave you a lot of time to analyze the data. Pick a project that you're sure you can finish in less than 10 weeks, and decide as early as you can on that project to give yourself time.
