Financial Operations Intern

May 2022 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I liked the fact that it was remote and they really emphasize internal development so they invest a lot of resources into their interns.

What I wish was different

Something I wish that could be different is a higher level of learning within the corporation so instead of focusing on just one area you could work in different parts of the company and learn more about other positions.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give to anyone contemplating this position is to be ready to work. Be a quick learner and don't be afraid to ask questions.

The staff were extremely helpful even with the internship being online. The company also integrates the interns very well with everyday activities going on with the company--i.e employee resource groups, happenings with the company.

Private Equity Analyst Intern

June - August 2021 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the hands on learning experience! From day one, I was given full flexibility to hop on calls and learn directly on the job, which made it so much more fun and engaging. I had constant mentorship and a wonderful relationship with my boss and team, which made encouraged me to ask questions and be open to learning.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to be there in person! Being able to work in person and engage in these meetings in person would've added another depth to the job, but I still really loved how well planned and engaging the job was remotely. I was constantly able to engage with my team everyday and never felt like the remote experience was taking away from the job.

Advice

Be excited and willing to learn! Everyone on the job wants to see you succeed and shares the same excitement and goals as you, so take advantage of it!

Direct Mail Acquisition Intern

June - August 2019 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture at CUNA Mutual Group. It was very relaxed and the managers did not treat me like an intern. They gave me real world assignments that allowed for me to learn technical skills. The manages didn't ridicule you if you asked lots of questions, they encouraged questions. They paid for the housing for students who traveled from out of state.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have networked more.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to ask for clarity on your projects, should you need it. Network with as many people as possible during your intern, you never know who can help you with what.

application development intern

June - August 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

experience working at a large corporation, first time being in a scrum team, helpful and nice people on my team.

What I wish was different

web app dev technologies too outdated, more up to date technologies such as reactjs instead of vb.net/asp.net. more interesting project to do instead of working on small changes on a large codebase in which one has to familiarize themselves with thousands of lines of code which may be uncommented.

Advice

make sure to be proactive and ask team for help when needed to facilitate learning and development process.

Marketing & Communications Intern

June - September 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

The variety of projects I got to work on with the Employee Communications team. I got great exposure to the marketing field and got to grow my network inside the company. I loved the intern program throughout the summer where we got to play beach volleyball, travel to surrounding cities, and get to know each other outside of the office.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had better known the description of the internship because the job description was vague.

Advice

Say "yes" to new opportunities and put yourself in unfamiliar grounds to develop yourself.
