Software Engineering Intern

June 2018 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I liked the culture, the people, the work, and the food. The culture is laid back, yet extremely hardworking. The people are nice and smarter than any group of people I've ever met. The work you do as an intern is very valuable and meaningful to the company. You get to write code that is pushed to production. The company has unlimited snacks, breakfast, and lunch catering 3 days a week.

What I wish was different

This is a minor thing, but I wish there was a soundproof barrier between the different sections of the company.

Advice

Keep in mind that the full-time engineers have their own deadlines to meet and that you should think carefully about how you want to use their time.

Software Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

Fast paced, smart people, start-up environment. Chance to take ownership and responsibility for big projects. Modern web stack. Lots of snacks. Opportunity to experience research, backend, and web dev all in one office.

What I wish was different

Project management could be improved. The company moves so fast that best practices are not always enforced in the code base and there were occasionally miscommunications between teams. There is a trade-off between moving quickly and enforcing best design practices.

Advice

Work hard and take advantage of the responsibility you can take.
