Hematology Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I love the lab that I work in. I have been there for four summers now. Being able to return to the same project and see it evolve over the years is very fulfilling.

What I wish was different

I took a month off to study abroad which prevented me from conducting a summer long project and presenting on it. I wish I had been able to do this.

Advice

Fully embrace it. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask.

Student Researcher

May - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I had many opportunities to network and meet with professors and faculty at the hospital, University of Cincinnati and even was introduced to the director of the Cincinnati Zoo. Additionally, I learned so much about immunology, about working with animal models and what a full-time research career looks like!

What I wish was different

The program started off slow and it was a few weeks before I was able to really start working and researching which was very frustrating at the time.

Advice

Keep pushing. There were days or many days in a row where there wasn't much going on in the lab so we didn't have any work or were forced to read scientific paper after scientific paper. But we continued to ask grad students if they had anything we could do or could watch and sometimes it paid off. Also, this was my third summer of applying for research jobs and I didn't hear about this one until March, which is pretty late, and I was expecting to get denied once again, but this time it worked out. So just because you don't get in or don't get the job this summer, don't give up try again. Sometimes it has less to do with you and more to do with funding or something else totally out of your control.
