Valued my input as a student, encouraged bonding between myself and other practicum students, and focused on making sure my education was well-rounded. Very supportive staff and supervisors. Worked well with us when we requested additional career preparation opportunities.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to see more areas of the hospital but they were in the middle of an expansion/move so certain areas were not able to be visited
Advice
Do not be afraid to ask to see more of an area you are interested in! I did this with 2 units and am so glad I did.

Student II
April 2019 • Cincinnati, OH
What I liked
I most enjoyed the clinical research studies that I contributed to. Interacting firsthand with the children with whom we conducted research was the most influential and motivating part of my experience.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had had more time to contribute to the clinical projects that I worked on.
Advice
Even if you feel that an opportunity may not be the best fit for you, it is better to try it and be disappointed than to never try it and wonder what could have been. At first, I was not sure if this clinical research experience would align with my strengths, but after trying it, I am glad that I was able to put forth effort and actually enjoy it.

Student Researcher
May - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH
What I liked
I had many opportunities to network and meet with professors and faculty at the hospital, University of Cincinnati and even was introduced to the director of the Cincinnati Zoo. Additionally, I learned so much about immunology, about working with animal models and what a full-time research career looks like!
What I wish was different
The program started off slow and it was a few weeks before I was able to really start working and researching which was very frustrating at the time.
Advice
Keep pushing. There were days or many days in a row where there wasn't much going on in the lab so we didn't have any work or were forced to read scientific paper after scientific paper. But we continued to ask grad students if they had anything we could do or could watch and sometimes it paid off. Also, this was my third summer of applying for research jobs and I didn't hear about this one until March, which is pretty late, and I was expecting to get denied once again, but this time it worked out. So just because you don't get in or don't get the job this summer, don't give up try again. Sometimes it has less to do with you and more to do with funding or something else totally out of your control.
