What I liked

I loved the hands on nature of the job. The project based internship allowed me to dive as deep as I wanted into a particular subject and then see it in action in the field. The work culture was collaborative and inclusive, and I enjoyed interacting with all the employees. The amount of career opportunities here is immense, and each role has unique characteristics that keep the job exciting.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity to choose which projects to be placed on.

Advice

It’s important to ask questions and seek help when unsure of something. It’s the best way to succeed in any new environment.

I really admired Chevron values that I still apply in a daily life, such as: "do it right or not at all" or "there is always time to do it right." It is a great corporation!

What I liked

I was afforded the opportunity to take on several hands on projects that were value adding as well as great learning experiences. Chevron did a great job of giving me exposure to many different aspects of Land work, as well as the many moving parts of working for a fully integrated oil and gas company.

What I wish was different

I was the only intern in the Land department in Midland, and I think I would've had an even better experience if I shared it with another intern.

Advice

Take on every possible side project that comes up, as this is one of the major areas that allowed me to grow in conjunction with my core projects.

What I liked

The company culture. The dress code is business casual (meaning slacks and a polo), everyone is willing to help the interns or and answer questions, and there's a very healthy work life balance present at the office.

What I wish was different

I wish I had traveled a bit more over the 3-day weekends.

Be willing to do whatever project needs to be done. You get experience and it shows that you're a team player.

What I liked

I had the opportunity to travel to San Ramon, CA (Bay Area) to intern with Chevron. I really like Chevron’s culture. Chevron values diversity and inclusion which I really felt as an intern. Everyone was really helpful through my internship. I’ve gained lots of insite on application security within the enterprise. Along with learning, Chevron hosts many intern events so there is many opportunities to interact with other interns.

What I wish was different

I wished I would have lived with another intern or Chevron employee. Costs of living in California is really expensive.

Advice

Always be open to getting out of your comfort zone. Make good relationships with your team and coworkers. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help if you need it.

Note that Chevron will usually give returns site specific, takes some effort to change roles — but it is possible!

What I liked

The internship was well organized and interns were well supported by the organization.

What I wish was different

I didn't connect with the people with whom I worked, which made it hard to enjoy the job from day to day. This was my second internship with Chevron, however, and in my first internship, I loved the folks with whom I worked. The take away is that your milage may really vary when you work for a large company.

Advice

When you are deciding what jobs to apply to or choosing between offers, consider what the job will actually be- what your team will work on, what your responsibilities will be, etc. It is easy to get caught up in a the idea of a "good job", and accept a position that is not actually a good job FOR YOU. Also consider what the full time job would look like if you were offered a return offer. For example: a Drilling and Completions intern is not often sent to the field, but full time employees spend 2 weeks at a time living in remote locations far from their "home bases" (therefore far from their family/spouse/children/friends) for the first 4-5 years of their careers. Be honest about what lifestyle you want to live, and don't choose positions which set you up for a life you aren't interested in.

What I liked

At Chevron, you are hired as a full employee for the duration of your internship. During your internship, you are paired with a mentor who will teach you, help you become integrated into the Chevron community, and help you to complete your intern project(s). Intern projects at Chevron are needed, value-adding work. In addition to being fully integrated with a team of engineers, you are also invited to participate in events and organizations within the Chevron network. Some events are specifically for interns, others run through organizations you are encouraged to join, including Women's, LGBTQ+, Asian, Black, or Hispanic groups among others.

What I wish was different

At Chevron, like at most large companies, your internship workload is largely driven by your own ambition. I set my own goals and scheduled my own time. As a result, I found that I worked through my stated projects well before the end of my internship. After that, with the help of my mentor, I was able to expand my projects, roles on my teams, and find additional work. You will need to do this or will risk being bored. Going into the internship, you should also be aware that high-performing interns are expected to find additional work to do, as part of an effort to "go above and beyond".

Advice

Chevron cares deeply about its employees- your team will be an invaluable resource to you. They will want to know you and to help you. PLEASE ask lots of questions. It will give you an opportunity to demonstrate that you are quick to learn and pleasant to teach. It will only serve to engratiate you to those you work with.
