Cerner Corporation

Systems Intern

June - August 2017 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

I felt very welcomed at Cerner, the managers allowed to interact with people from different teams whenever possible. The building layout made that very easy to do and the conference rooms where readily available when we needed them to discuss basically anything whether its Cerner related, Technology related, or life related. Everyone was very helpful during my internship. They worked around our schedule of intern events, which were all very enjoyable. I also had the great opportunity to attend their Devcon conference and hear from several other intelligent employees that I would not have normally seen at the building I worked at. The other events including Royals, and Sporting KC games were very enjoyable as well. The data center tour is a must for anyone looking to work at Cerner.

What I wish was different

I do wish I was able to view the other campuses a bit more. I worked at Continuous and went over to Innovations a few times but it would have been nice to see

Advice

The biggest thing is to not be afraid to ask questions. Even in meetings where you may not be quite as knowledgeable about the subject, ask questions to learn more, you may notice something as an outsider or just learn something new. I'm not just talking about meetings, ask your manager or other team members to shadow other members for a day and gain some insight from more than just your team. Reach out to your mentor, they can be an excellent source of information as well. Ask questions, there are plenty of intelligent people at Cerner and they are more than happy to transfer some knowledge to a potential new member to the team. As mentioned earlier, I would also recommend going on the Data Center tour, that is a truly amazing experience.

What I liked

I really liked the learning experience and the placement on the team where I was the only intern. It really forced me to integrate and experience what it would really be like as a software engineer.

What I wish was different

I didn't really like the city of Kansas City, it felt a little bit boring for the summer.

Advice

The hire a lot of interns to full time after you have completed the internship.

What I liked

I really enjoyed how quickly I was integrated with my team and how smoothly the on boarding process went. They included a plural sight account to supplement the internal online trainings.

Advice

Definitely bring a car so that you are able to commute to work and other activities! There are multiple work locations and you do not know your placement until later on.
