Case Western Reserve University

Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Loved gaining hands-on experience in science and also was able to mentor a high school student

What I wish was different

Advice

Start research early if you're considering it as a career option/want to do it for fun during undergrad. The earlier you start the more time you have to work on your project and the more autonomy you will have in the lab later on.

Student Researcher

May - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

It was a great opportunity to gain research experience through a grant provided by Case's SOURCE office. I learned a lot of lab techniques and got to participate in a research project that is continuing into the school year. The mentoring I was able to receive was helpful for figuring out what I want and don't want for a future career.

What I wish was different

I wish the research had a bit more guidance from the PI and I wish I had been able to interact more with other summer student researchers.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone and try different opportunities. Never be afraid to apply for that scholarship or grant or job because you are just as qualified as anyone else.

What I liked

Work in a larger lab using both experimental/wet lab and computational techniques was a great expansion on the work I have been fortunate to take part in at Oberlin. Conducting research at Case Western Reserve University this past summer provided a rich introduction to research at a large institution. I was lucky to have been able to get training prior to starting work, and this led to a very productive and worthwhile summer experience. I am extremely thankful for the support and funding provided by the Oberlin College Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry that allowed me to participate in this opportunity

Advice

Reach out to labs/companies/organizations that are involved in things you are interested in or employ people with similar skill sets. You may find a position you really enjoy, and you might even be able to contribute right away.

I learned so much through working in this research lab, and feel better prepared to perform research in my future as an MD.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything had been different.

Advice

I highly recommend finding a research position if you're a pre-med student like me. I really enjoy it and feel like I can apply my science knowledge that I learned in my undergraduate courses.

What I liked

Learning how to use a 3D laser scanner

What I wish was different

Waiting times for 3D prints were a little long, but there was nothing I could have done about that.

Advice

3D printing can take a lot of time and ThinkBox has different summer hours from the school year hours.
