Cargill

Accounting and Finance Intern

May - August 2021 • Wayzata, MN

What I liked

I loved that it was virtual, the people were really nice even though I couldn't meet them in person.

What I wish was different

I did not really get to know my fellow interns that well since we were in a virtual setting.

Advice

Do not overthink things. It is easy to psych yourself out of things before they even begin.

Warehouse worker

June - August 2018 • Swedesboro, NJ

What I liked

I liked being in a completely new work environment to me where I got to shape some of the skills that I have never had to use before.

What I wish was different

I wish the warehouse I worked in wasn't so cold, but it had to be in order to keep the products fresh.

Advice

One piece of advise I would give is that to never count yourself out of something just because you have never done it before. Go try new things and become the most well rounded person you can be because it will benefit you in the future.

I really enjoyed the environment that Cargill fosters for its Co-ops. I felt like a welcome member of the team who was valued and whose input was listened to.

I wish I would have had my full 8 month term, as I feel comfortable in the position and feel I could do a lot more with an extra 2 months.

Advice

I would go in expecting to learn a lot of different things and tackle a lot of challenges you might not have experience in.

Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Newark, CA

What I liked

Intern networking resources; virtual internship was structured very well considering the circumstances of covid; supervisor was flexible to give me work that was meaningful and beneficial to my personal skill set and experiences

What I wish was different

I wish I was not moved from the solar department to the packaging department, but it sounds like that was mainly due to covid

Advice

Reach out to presentation speakers in the virtual presentations for the interns or literally to anyone that you come into contact with if they are doing something that interests you. Schedule a meeting with them to learn about their career path because it will help you learn what you want to do and how you will be able to do it.

Industrial Production Management Intern

May - December 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Gaining real life experience, enjoyable work environment.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have lined up a little better with the type of career I want to have, but it was still a very enjoyable job.

Advice

Phone calls are 100 times more affective than emails. In my first month I tried to focus on communicating via email so that I would have records of what was said, but I found that if I actually wanted things done or responses I would have to rely on phone calls.

Summer Temp

May - August 2018 • Fort Morgan, CO

What I liked

The pay was pretty good and my coworkers were friendly.

What I wish was different

We worked 6-7 days a week and were there from 6am-3pm. It was kind of exhausting sometimes and I had to stand for 8.5 hrs.

Advice

I applied for the shipping department. It was really cold, but you get paid more since you work more days a week than anyone else, and there are no knives, so that's a plus :)

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I was located at the headquarters, so I had the opportunity to work cross-functionally with departments outside the transportation & logistics department. This allowed for a better overall understanding of how Cargill operates on a global scale.

What I wish was different

I had to take a lot of initiative within the office to make myself known. With so many people at headquarters, you can quickly become a wallflower if you do not make it abundantly clear what you want to get out of your internship.

Advice

I would advise going in with an open mind on what role you receive initially and, if it's not something that is growing you professionally, talk with your coworkers or boss. I found that everyone I worked with was willing to help me pursue development opportunities so long as I took the initiative to ask.

Geographically I would have preferred a larger city.

Advice

Understand before going into the position what kind of work environment you want and where you want to be later in life.
