What I liked

I really appreciated the flexibility to name your own pay rate and hours and also the ability to select families to work with that best fit your personality and values. Additionally I liked how I could both apply for jobs and have people who viewed my profile message me personally to request to hire me for jobs because they liked my resume/profile.

Advice

I think it’s important to make sure an employer has your safety in mind. One thing I appreciated with the set-up of care.com is that precautions are taken to not share your phone number or address with a potential employer (family) until you have consented and both parties are on board. When using an online job/career search tool it is important to always be aware of how much of your personal information is available to the public. Also I learned the value of creating a marketable profile that drew potential employers in. Don’t be afraid to list your strengths and qualifications, while also letting some of your personality shine through on your profile, as it is the only interaction potential employers will have with you before they schedule an interview or hire you.

Product Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Waltham, MA

What I liked

I liked getting to know our product better and suggesting improvements by auditing customer journeys and key user flows. It was also interesting to do customer and competitive research. I enjoyed working for a mission-based organization that embraced collaboration using the Agile project management methodology.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to work more on go-to-market strategies in product marketing.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions because there are a lot of product-specific and business acronyms. Take advantage of getting to know different people from different teams to explore what other positions you might like.

Baby Sitter

May - August 2018 • Falls Church, VA

What I liked

I liked being able to create my own schedule and work with the parents one on one each day.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've have a more consistent job, some weeks I worked every day and others only two or three days depending on the kid's schedules.

Advice

Babysitting would be a great option for students taking online classes or want a side jo on top of a more consistent job, especially if you have a car to drive kids to and from camps.

Nanny

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved working with an infant over the summer. She was three months old when I started and just learning to hold her head up by herself. By the time my time ended with her, she was learning to sit up! Seeing part of the human development process first hand was really awesome.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have advocated for a larger paycheck so that I would have been able to save more money.

Advice

Though attachment to children of all ages is necessary to deliver compassionate care, please be sure to keep a separation between your work as a nanny and your own life, as it can be easy to look at the child as your own.
