Student Worker

May - August 2019 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

Variety in work and coworkers.

What I wish was different

Tasks are delegated seemingly on-the-fly by other student workers, and it can be a headache trying to figure out which employee one should listen to.

Advice

Go out of your way to talk to your leads about what you are doing, otherwise they might report to the staff that you went missing, even if you were assisting other employees.

student worker job in financial aid

February 2018 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

I like how structured this job is. Also, I liked how I learned a lot about the financial aspect of universities. Now I know what kind of loans to take out and how to correctly fill out my FAFSA paperwork. I enjoyed working in a office work space, too.

What I wish was different

I wish that the training in the beginning of my job prepared me for the strenuous phone calls. It would have been beneficial to have simulation phone calls to prepare for the high volume of calls for the fall semester.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give would to be open and patient with yourself coming into a new atmosphere.

Peer advisor

May 2018 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to get to know the students and help them pick their classes. It was amazing to see all the different careers that they wanted to go into and how prepared they were.

What I wish was different

On occasion, the online system would be very slow or not work, which caused the student to be waiting for a while with nothing to do. However, I do understand that this is inevitable and the staff is always understanding of the situation and often times, so are the students.

Advice

It can seem confusing in the beginning; don’t worry. Don’t be afraid to ask others if you need help or to take initiative when needed. It’s ok to ask questions.

Set Painter

September 2016 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

I love set painting and design. This program in particular lets you share your ideas and lets you have a huge say in what the final product is going to look like. My bosses are fantastic and sarcastic as well, and I fit in right away when I started working there. I was very shy about how people would like me in the program, but after I started working there, I realized I could just be my sarcastic and goofy self. They definitely stretch you in what you can do, and that is extremely important for me because I would've never thought that I could paint a portrait and it actually come across as beautiful.

What I wish was different

I only wish we got paid more than minimum wage, because it is a lot of heavy lifting and hard labor for little pay.

Advice

I would say that no matter where you're working never be afraid to be yourself, because there are always people who will accept you for who you are, and if you're working for a place that doesn't like the real you, you shouldn't work there.
