Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana

Healthcare Analytics Intern

June 2020 • Metairie, LA

What I liked

The internship went fully remote when covid hit, so that demonstrated to me that the company was flexible and gave me the impression that they valued their interns. I love the team-based work environment and professional development training. I also like that they want you to actually contribute to real projects and improve your skills so you're not just doing busy or clerical work. They also frequently hire interns and I've been able to extend my internship into the next semester, which has been really great.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had more opportunities to get to know each other informally because you don't get as much of that interaction when you're remote, but I think that may be changing in the future. This fully-remote work environment is new to a lot of people. I also had some issues getting access to everything I needed at the beginning, which slowed down my ability to start working on projects, so a smoother process for that would be better.

Advice

SQL and Python are used the most, so I would try to have some experience with those languages before this internship.

Facility Reimbursement Intern

January - November 2020 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

I accepted this position to grow my proficiency with Microsoft Excel and SQL queries. I easily tripled my comfort with both and have been able to apply these skills at other jobs and in personal projects. I learned so much but also got to see a measurable impact from the work I was doing. Super rewarding and definitely helped me grow in my career.

What I wish was different

There was some struggles, especially towards midterms, balancing a work schedule and a school schedule. My manager was super accommodating with changing my schedule to match any changes at school, but make sure you have the bandwidth to put in the hours.

Advice

It takes time to adjust to the lingo and the jargon, so it will take a lot of listening, but also don't be afraid to speak up! If you have questions, ask them early, but also use your college experience to give ideas no one else is thinking.

Compliance Intern

January - May 2020 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

I liked being able to get an in-depth overview of the health care industry. Learning about the various laws and regulations that affect Blue Cross was great experience for me. Also, I was able to apply a lot of what I learned in school to my internship.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I wish was different about my internship. It was a great experience and I enjoyed working with everyone in the Compliance and Ethics Department.

Advice

Be willing to learn and be available to help co-workers with tasks. I was able to work on many different projects throughout my internship and they all helped me gain more knowledge of the healthcare industry.

Community Relations Intern

August 2018 • Lafayette, LA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to learn about the work of non-profits across the state of Louisiana. I did not realize how much they do to improve the communities that they serve. Also, I was able to attend a lot of different events that non-profits hosted, which was great for networking.

What I wish was different

There isn't one thing that I would want to be different during my internship. I enjoyed working with the Community Relations team at Blue Cross and learning from them.

Advice

I would suggest to attend every event that you can. Also, work hard and be willing to learn during the internship.
