BJC HealthCare

Hospice Card Creator

December 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked that the program allows remote individuals to mail in letters for Hospice patients rather than only allowing in-person delivery. I am happy that there is a format and structure that administration wants us to follow because it will allow volunteers to meet required criteria. With this, administration still enables volunteers to add festive colors and designs, which is a great way for volunteers to incorporate their own touch of creativity in the cards.

Hospital Food Service Worker

April 2020 • Columbia, MO

What I liked

Their flexibility to work with your schedule. They offer a competitive pay.

What I wish was different

That I didn’t start during a pandemic because it was quite difficult to work under the same room with a lot of COVID patients.

Advice

Communicate with your managers in advance because they prefer when they are given a heads up about schedule and hour prefences.

Student nurse

May - July 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I loved getting the experience to work alongside a nurse preceptor to learn her roles and the unit’s roles, as well as get more hands on skills practice.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

If you are considering an externship of internship, do it! It teaches you a lot, gives you more practice with skills, and allows you to explore a unit for several weeks in order to determine if you see a future on that unit or not! It also gets your foot in the door of whatever company you decide to work for!

Design Intern

May 2019 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

The Creative Services team is very helpful and understanding. They offer feedback and guidance whenever possible and gave me a few fun projects to work on!

What I wish was different

I wish the environment would have been more creative, and less work in print (flyers, brochures, etc)

Advice

This is a great starting experience, but take into consideration that it is common for in-house design teams to not design their own ad campaigns and typically hire an agency to do a lot of the highly creative work. This is something I did not know.

Summer Nurse Extern

May - July 2019 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I loved getting to have more hands on clinical experience by working one-on-one with a nurse preceptor rather than being a group of 8 nursing students during a traditional clinical rotation. By working 3 12-hour shifts a week with the same nurse, we developed a rhythm together and I was able to form relationships with patients as I saw them multiple days in a row. My technical nursing skills, critical thinking abilities, time management, and prioritization skills all greatly improved because of this experience. I felt much more confident returning to clinical the following semester with this summer clinical experience under my belt.

Advice

Be open to any unit you may be placed on because you will learn a lot and enjoy your experience regardless of what hospital or unit you're placed on!

Assistant Teacher

June - September 2019 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Working with BJC gave me experience working with children of multiple age brackets and different backgrounds.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, I did not receive as much training as other employees. Extended training would have made the transition into my role much smoother.

Advice

Implement a disciplinary or classroom management system immediately.
