Bethune-Cookman University

Orientation Leader

August 2019 • Daytona Beach, FL

What I liked

I loved how quickly we came together and were able to make the incoming freshmen's orientation week unremarkable! I got to network with a lot of people who hold leadership positions around campus, like myself. Our advisors were very resourceful as well!

What I wish was different

I wish it was more organized, a lot of things were done at the last minute. I also wish the advisors would've had a better plan put together for how to make a better mark on the incoming freshmen.

Advice

This is a great opportunity to meet new people and help make our university gain it's positive image back! Don't do just take this position to put it on your resume... With the proper preparation and dedication, this can be a live changing experience for yourself and others around you!

Oral History Project Intern

May - August 2018 • Daytona Beach, FL

What I liked

This internship was an offsite collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. I got to dive into a rich history of a black community in Daytona Beach and produce a website displaying the oral histories we collected. NMAAHC supplemented the work we were doing at Bethune-Cookman with online professional development seminars. At the end of the internship, I was able to present the work we had been doing at the annual Association of African American Museums Conference.

What I wish was different

In comparison to other interns' experiecnes in this program, the offsite location at Bethune-Cookman University was a pretty relaxed, informal environment. I would have liked to gain more experience in a professional work setting with a larger group of co-workers.

Advice

Take advantage of professional development opportunities and find a mentor who can help you work through career planning. These opportunities also present themselves as good networking opportunities that can help you connect with potential employers.
