ALDI USA

Local marketing intern

May - August 2023 • Aurora, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed working with a company that is expanding so much. The growth at Aldi is consistent and will be for years to come.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get out from behind my desk a little bit more. It felt like a majority of computer work.

Advice

I really really enjoyed this internship, and I think it taught me a lot of this that I want in a job and also some things I don’t want.

District Manager Intern

June - August 2022 • Webberville, MI

What I liked

On day one I was given real responsibilities and the opportunity to learn and act in the role that the internship modeled. This was a great experience to learn all the aspects of the ALDI model, taking a sneak peak at warehousing and taking a deep dive into day to day operations. The internship was a great preview to what the real District Manager role is like, allowing you to work with several district managers throughout the summer to learn and observe several different leadership styles helping to mold your own unique style of leadership.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to interact more with the other interns, but the independence helped me learn and grow to my full potential.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try retail. If you enjoy a fast paced environment and working with others, this is an extremely rewarding position.

Warehouse Stocker

June - November 2021 • Oak Creek, WI

What I liked

Organized, Physically active, fun

What I wish was different

Work was done until we were finished for the day. It was often a 10 hour day and sometimes 11-12, which is long when you are doing physical labor. I would’ve liked it if there had been a set end-time for the day.

Advice

Finding out about jobs from other people and networking is a great strategy to use in any profession.

District Manager Intern

May - July 2021 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

- challenging environment where you take on a lot of responsibility - peer advisor gives you constant feedback - bi-weekly salary and mileage paid - encourage interns to become full-time if candidate if interested

What I wish was different

- working hours ranged from 30-50 hours a week - make sure you have a reliable vehicle, you drive to multiple stores every day with your peer advisor - physically and mentally demanding, especially in the 3 week in-store phase

Advice

The DM Intern position will keep you busy all summer. Make sure you have a reliable vehicle and are able to dedicate 10 weeks for this internship. I would strongly suggest you have previous retail experience to prepare yourself for the in-store experience (where you work as a store associate). It can be overwhelming at times but proves to be rewarding at the end. It made me appreciate retail workers tremendously.

Store Associate

June 2020 • Amherst, OH

What I liked

I like the company's goals and strategies, and care for their employees. This is shown in terms of compensation: $70 to cover steel-toed shoes, 5-7% company match 401k account, periodical bonuses, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job was not so physically taxing by the end of the shift.

Advice

It is a good experience because ALDI employees are viewed to be hard-working and determined individuals.

store associate

July 2018 • Rice Lake, WI

What I liked

My store manager is very flexible with scheduling; I get to choose my own schedule. Days off are always honored. Coworkers are wonderful.

What I wish was different

Most all of the work I do is independent, so I do not get the chance to know my coworkers.

Advice

Pay is great but I definitely work for it. Everyone at Aldi gets an efficiency rating every day, and everything you do is timed so everyone is as efficient as possible.

District Manager Intern

June - July 2020 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed being given real responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Along with that, everyday was different and I got to see all aspects of the business from the sales floor to divisional offices. Also, you work with everyone in the division from store employees to the divisional vice president. Lastly, I had a summer project that I had to present and was really given the ability to think outside the box and come together with my solution to a situation.

What I wish was different

I wish COVID didn't change the internship like it did. As a grocer, ALDI's business still continued and my internship was in person, however many things changed with regards to COVID. Most notably, the internship was shortened by two weeks, meetings and other interactions were conducted abiding to differing rules, and working with fellow interns happened less.

Advice

One piece of advice would be to soak up as much as you can throughout an internship as everything you encounter is valuable for your future. So much happened throughout my internship that it almost became hard to keep track of what I had done already. What helped me was to step back and think about what had happened throughout the day or what was going to happen in the coming weeks.

Cashier

April - August 2020 • McHenry, IL

What I liked

I loved my co workers and loved the atmosphere of Aldi. They offered great support and a really positive work environment.

What I wish was different

I think that just because of COVID it made a lot of things difficult.

Advice

Go in with an open mind. At the beginning I was told that I would be cleaning carts outside and that was my only job. But then they decided to train me on registers and having me do more things inside the store. I went from being a seasonal employee to a part time employee.

District Manager Intern

June - August 2018 • Webberville, MI

What I liked

At ALDI Inc. I was able to take on a real leadership role rather than the typical busy work interns are thought to complete. During the first couple weeks I was shadowing a District Manager, but during the end of the internship I was able to take the role into my own hands and do District Manager tasks independently.

What I wish was different

The position was my first opportunity to work full time (40-50 hours per week). Not something I wanted to change, just the biggest difference walking in from my previous jobs.

Advice

This position does have a lot of responsibility on the students part, but it gives students great experience outside the classroom and potentially a look at what a future in the business world could be like. Overall great internship, and I would definitely recommend. For students, remember to always be confident and professional in the tasks you complete. You are going to make mistakes and that is okay! Even if you are a freshman (like I was), get out there and start gaining experience talking to professionals at different companies.

District Manager Intern

May - July 2020 • Salisbury, NC

What I liked

It was a wonderful experience to work alongside several motivated and empowering leaders. You will learn how to ensure results, lead people, and drive change in each of your teams.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more communication between the interns and directors on what they expect from us. In addition to this, there could have been more formal feedback throughout the internship.

Advice

In order to make a good impression, you need to be very vocal, ready to drive change, confident, and constructive. It is imperative that you take this experience seriously as you are dealing with real people on a daily basis, not merely numbers on a page. Also, you should ALWAYS remain professional even if everyone else seems very comfortable. Also, do very well on your presentation. Don't overthink it.
