What I liked

The people you work with are nice, I enjoyed seeing my coworkers. They also offer a 30% discount on select store items which was also nice.

What I wish was different

You get offered no benefits at all if you are a part-time worker; you don't even get sick leave. I had coworkers whose availability was completely disregarded, whether or not they had classes or needed sleep overnight for class in the morning. They pay extremely low for the amount of work, other stores offer nearly double for the same positions (you work the equivalent of a cashier, online pickup and shipment, customer service, janitor, AND stocker). If you work after closing, you'll often have to work overtime as there are not enough people (max five) to close the store, which sometimes can mean you hit the 5-hour mark and should have taken a 30-minute unpaid lunch break during the day (company policy even if over 18). If this happens, the next time you go in you will be unable to clock in until you fill out when you had your lunch break, even if you didn't take one. This, supposedly, means a lunch break is taken from your time.

Advice

If you need a job quickly, they hire everybody, but if you need a liveable wage and reasonable hours, don't work here. They overwork you and underpay you.

What I liked

I like the laid back atmosphere and flexibility of teaching at Michaels. I also love crafting so I'm getting paid to do what I love every day!

What I wish was different

The summer camp lesson plans were split up by age group so I had to teach two classes in one which can be difficult to coordinate. Also there was a lack of organization with student registration so every class was confusing as to who had actually signed up and what my class size was.

Advice

Stay organized and plan ahead whenever possible!

sales associate

What I liked

I enjoyed working amongst other college students and having a flexible schedule. There was also room for promotions within a short span of time (<6 months)

What I wish was different

I wish the management was more genuine towards its employees. The turnover rate was fast so they often did not take the time to get to know us.

Advice

If you enjoy helping people do crafts and hobbies you can turn this into a fun position using passion and creativity.

What I liked

The atmosphere of my store was very calm, of course there were times when the job was stressful but never to the point that I couldn't handle it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to learn the store, I was trained as a cashier but was also asked to work around the store cleaning and assisting customers. It was difficult to answer questions that I didn't know the answer to.

Advice

Spend time learning about the store before you apply, or after the application. If you are hired it'll help make the transition as an employee much smoother.

What I wish was different

I loved working for Michaels! My managers and co-workers are absolutely wonderful to work with. Michaels has great benefits and is always allowing you to try new things. They were very flexible with my schedule. It’s a great company.

What I wish was different

That I could transfer to a michaels near my school! Going to school in a very small town has few options for work.

What I liked

Friends made through cashier role. Lovely staff that was kind and considerate and easy to work with.

What I wish was different

We hardly get any hours (4 hour shifts max of 4 days a week).

Advice

This is great if you need an easy introduction to retail work. Other than that, it does not pay well. It is great if you need a job fast and you need something seasonal.

What I liked

The flexibility of hours

What I wish was different

Scheduling could have been better. The GM doesn't pay attention to schedule availability so it caused a bit of a problem.

Advice

It's work experience. You encounter a variety of people so you see the spectrum of how coworkers and supervisors can be.
