Blumhouse Productions is a multi-media production company that has pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking- producing high-quality micro-budget films for wide release. Since its launch, Blumhouse has produced the highly profitable Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious and Sinister franchises. For television, Blumhouse is working on both scripted and non-scripted shows including projects for Syfy (Ascension), MTV (Eye Candy), ABC and Mike Darnell. Blumhouse previously executive produced the Emmy nominated and Critics’ Choice award winner The Normal Heart for HBO, Stranded for Syfy and The River for ABC. Blumhouse’s upcoming micro-budget wide releases include Ouija and The Boy Next Door for Universal and the next chapter in the Insidious franchise for Focus Features. Whiplash with Sony Pictures Classics, which won both the Grand Jury and Audience prizes at Sundance, will be out this fall.

“As a rising Sophomore, my first Emerson summer internship was with Blumhouse Productions in Los Angeles. Needless to say, I was absolutely thrilled to have been offered this incredible opportunity. The internship exceeded my wildest expectations. Blumhouse Productions has been the perfect place for me to intern as it is a multi-media production company that pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking, producing high-quality small-budget horror films for wide release. My passion is writing and directing horror. My weekly responsibilities included script coverage, research projects, as well as sitting in on internal staff meetings with executives and creatives. In addition to this workload, Blumhouse scheduled weekly Zoom Q&As with employees and creatives (including Jason Blum himself) which allowed me to gain insights into both how the company and industry works. Finally, there was an opportunity for interns to submit their own original short film into a Blumhouse summer film festival organized by the company, something that was incredibly fun and enlightening. Under the guidance of Blumhouse creatives, I created a pitch deck, wrote an original script and shot and edited my short horror film entirely over the summer (on a shoestring budget of course). My final cut will be available for sharing at the end of August. Some of the internal departmental weekly meetings I attended included: TV Production: A weekly deep dive into scripted and unscripted television projects in production. BHTV Staff: A biweekly tackle of high level hot topics, including new business, projects in development, sold projects, key projects, and marketing announcements with agenda topics from the Business Affairs, Human Resources, and the Finance team. Greenlight / Film Business Affairs: A weekly meeting to discuss a working production grid and legal action for a project, paired with updates between cross functional teams including Development, Finance, Marketing, Casting and Post Production.  Streaming Meeting: A weekly run through of new business, and projects in development and pre-production from the television movie slate.”
