Lab Manager

February 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I have enjoyed being able to lead a team and work on an independent research project where I have submitted to present, and will submit for publication. During the summer we started a large data collection in collaboration with the Tucson Unified School District to collect survey data in sixth and ninth grades. We collect our pilot survey data and it was so cool to use what I have learned in other labs into my new position and develop surveys, protocols, and build rapport with the school district. I was the program coordinator for this specific project so it was amazing to be able to take charge of a project and make it my own.

What I wish was different

There is honestly nothing that I would have changed about this experience!

Advice

Anything that is related to psychological research will involve SPSS and knowing basic statistics. Practice your SPSS knowledge now and watch a lot of tutorials to really understand it so that you are ready for the future!

Software Developer

October 2018 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

I am gaining real industry experience by applying what I have learned in my classes. This helped me gain an advantage in my senior-level class because I have prior knowledge of what is being taught.

What I wish was different

I would like to have more developers in my team because currently there are only two of us. This would allow me to gain more team engaging experience.

Advice

I think it is important to find a job that relates to your degree while you are attending school. This will help solidify your understanding of the material and help you grow as a professional before graduation. Even if it's a part-time job, having a mentor teach you can be extremely beneficial in your future success.

Office Aide Worker

May 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

The job kept me busy, and was different every day. I liked driving carts around. The people in the office are very friendly and helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish some of the job requirements were clearer in the beginning, but they became clearer over time. More hours would have been ideal.

Advice

Always communicate as much as possible, because many times even the person who you're getting a request from may not be communicating what they want clearly. It isn't just about whether you understood what they said or not.

Mobile Development

September 2018 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed working on graphics, VR, and AWS. It was fun and I learned a lot on the job.

What I wish was different

I wish I had God level coding skills and a bigger office. I also wish that I was more proficient in amazon web cloud services. Because of my lack of knowledge in the area I was unable to get real-time multiplayer AR and VR to work. Getting stuck on software development issues can take enormous amounts of time. It can take days and sometimes weeks.

Advice

Knowledge and experience makes a huge difference in productivity. The less you know about a software hurdle, the more time you will need to bang your head against your desk as you search for answers. Code online is written by humans and is error prone. One bug often leads to another. If it's a difficult software issue it might be very hard to find a clear answer online. You have to understand the systems, trying random stuff doesn't always work. If you understand what works and what doesn't then you can find your own solution.

Front Desk Receptionist

February 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

As a speech and hearing major, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the types of patients I will be taking care of. It is a great chance to see if you will enjoy the career path you have chosen.

What I wish was different

It's a student worker job, so I won't be working there after graduation.

Advice

One piece of advice is to use your summer working or volunteering in places that relate to your major. You will gain experience and it will be great for applications or resumes.
